Mick Carley

It was with great sadness that last week we learned of the passing of one of our most talented ever players Mick Carley. Mick was a pivotal member of The Downs Golden era in 60’s and 70’s that won three in a row ’68 ’69 and ’70 he then went on to captain the team to championship success in ’72 and ’74. The midfield partnership he held with Dom Murtagh for this era both with The Downs and Westmeath was formidable and often described as legendary. Mick will forever be remembered fondly in The Downs for many years to come. May he rest in Peace.

Medal Presentation

Last Saturday we held our underage medal presentation. It was a great night with a brilliant turn out. A special thanks to our guests from the county board and to both Jack Cooney and Geraldine Giles for taking time out to be there. Well done to all the underage mentors and committee members involved in organising the event.

Updated fixtures

Div 1 vs Garrycastle in The Downs, Friday 29th March @ 8pm

Div 2 vs Miltownpass in Kinnegad Sunday 31st March @ 1130am

Div 5 vs St Josephs in The Downs Tuesday 2nd April @11:30am

Division 1

The Division 1 lads got their first win of the campaign last Friday night at home to Shandonagh. The Downs led for much game following a promising start with both Dean Egerton andIan Martin in fine form up front, the latter finishing the game with a hat-trick of goals. The Downs held a slender half time lead, but it was in the second period that they began to pull away with some brilliant attacking moves that often started in defence with Trevor McCormack, Joe Moran and Darragh Egerton adding pace from deep. Full Time 4-13 to 2-11.

Division 2

Following two wins from two in this division The Downs were going into this game in optimistic form but knew nothing would be easy against a determined Ballymore side. Throughout the opening stages there was little to separate the sides with Jack Carroll in fine form with some brilliant kicking form his left boot, however just as the half was ending Ballymore pulled away to open a 0-07 to 0-05 lead. It was a lead The Downs struggled to close for the reminder of the game and the visitor’s rand out two-point winners 0-13 to 0-11.

Division 5

On Sunday morning we welcomed Castledaly to The Downs, it was the visitors who settle quicker and opened up a 0-06 to0-00 lead before long. Mid way through the opening half Eoghan Moore made a strong run from centre back and unleashed a powerful shot to the roof of the net from outside the 20 metre line. This kick started The Downs and Jack Carroll began to fine the scores adding a further 1-02 before the break to give The Downs a 2-03 to 0-07 lead. The second half continued much the same as the first had ended and Connor Duncan added a third goal to give The Downs a deserved 3-09 to 0-09 win.

U16

Well done to the U16 lads on their win over Mullingar Shamrocks last Monday week on a scorline of 6-06 to 2-05. Best wishes to Josh Murtagh who picked up a leg injury in the closing stages.
