Underage Results

The U12’s had an extremely busy weekend of football with both squads out twice each. The amber squad recorded a great win over Kilbeggan at home on Friday evening but unfortunately suffered a heavy loss to a strong CFCW side on Sunday morning. The black squad were away from home in Garrycastle on Friday evening earning themselves a narrow win in a very evenly contested game. They concluded the weekends involvement by defeating Killucan at home on Sunday evening in the heavy rain in a very competitive game. Well done to coaches/children and parents for all their hard work in organising/transport and playing games. Teamwork at its best.

The Downs was the venue for the second of the Go Games for U8 boys last Saturday morning with over 80 children descending on Molloy Park to showcase their skills. Many thanks to Mullingar Shamrocks and St. Lomans for travelling and again to our own coaches lead by Paddy Kenny for all their hard work in organising and coaching the teams.

LGFA Underage Results

Our U12 girls were out in numbers on Tuesday evening last as we hosted Cill Óige at home. It was wonderful to see both sides fielding two teams and putting on a great display of football. Training for our U12s is on Tuesdays/Thursdays at 6.30.

Our U14 girls made the journey to Garrycastle on Thursday evening to play for their first time in Division 1. Despite giving a decent performance themselves, Garrycastle were just too strong on the night emerging as comprehensive victors.

Our U16’s opened their campaign with a home tie against St. Josephs on Thursday evening at home. Both sides were evenly enough matched until the visitors got a few crucial scores towards the end to run out winners by 4 points. Final score: The Downs 4-04 St. Josephs 4-08. We hope to bounce back next week with an away tie versus Caulry on Tueday 30th May.

U15 Division 3 John West Féile Champions

What a weekend of football our U15 girls served up this weekend taking part and winning the Division 3 John West Féile competition hosted by our near neighbours Coralstown Kinnegad. Our panel of players started off the preliminary stages sluggish and succumbed to a strong Coralstown Kinnegad by the narrowest of margins in the opening game. However, we bounced back very quickly to overcome Kilbeggan in the second game in comprehensive fashion lining up a semi-final with St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge. In a game that was cagey on both sides, it was ourselves that managed the fatigue best overcoming a spirited St. Marys on a score-line of The Downs 2-05 St. Marys 1-04. This meant that we were now going to face Coralstown Kinnegad in the final in Killucan on Sunday afternoon. From the first whistle our girls demonstrated a steadfast stance putting on a superb display of football to overcome Coralstown Kinnegad who had just the previous day defeated us. We are immensely proud of this bunch of girls who work tirelessly to improve their skills and ability. Co-captains Kayla McHugh and Lauren English deservedly were presented with the cup much to the delight of The Downs supporters. Congratulations to all involved and hopefully it will be the first of many for this group.
